6.00am. - My Alarm goes off. 6.50am - I leave my house and get the train to London. During my travel along the London underground I started noticing teenagers appearing. A bit early I thought to myself as it was only around 08.30am. Are these people going to GameStarsLive? As I got closer to the stop to change onto the Docklands light railway the final stretch, around 80% of the train was full of teenagers destined for Excel! 9.30am - Finally after my traveling I am outside excel Custom House in London Docklands.
I arrived early in the hope I would avoid the queue. As I approached I could see a large queue of people who I thought must be the muppets who didn't buy their tickets over the internet and were waiting to get served. I walked on past them and then a heard a women shouting "If you have your tickets get in the queue! If not go inside and buy some". hmm, So people who brought their tickets on the door avoided the queue system and got in first. Never mind. 20 mins later I was inside the big event! Many big names were there. AMD, Intel, ATI, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and loads more.
As soon as I got inside I looked for that big Activision sign to head onto the Doom 3 booth. It wasn't opened as I was early. I asked the big fat guy when I could go in and he said at 10.00am. So I waited patiently around. Promptly at 10.00am I returned to see a few people just pop inside. I said Can I go in now. He replied Got proof of age. No I said. Sorry you can't come in. So I said I am 18. You’re not coming in until I see proof of age. I replied. I am the webmaster of Doom3HeadQuarters.com and I have come down here soley for this attraction. What am I supposed to tell 1600 members? That you just refused to let me in. Yeah, whatever you like. So I didn't get to go inside the Doom 3 booth.
Notice the little 18 notice in the above image.
That’s what happens when you employ idiotic staff. I was pretty disappointed with this. So I decided to have a wonder around...
OOo la la! A bunch of girls wearing tiny mini skirts and revealing tops... Now I was originally going to take some pictures of the gaming booths but then my attention changed slightly. As you can see if once you get further down this page.
There were loads of booths with loads of different games. Halo 2 was a very big attraction and the queue was soon around 1 hour long wait with crazed fans waiting to play. A couple life sized Halo figures were wondering around the building too.
Other big games there were Need for Speed Underground 2. This seemed identical to the first. Now unless you’re heavily into the game I don't think it'd be worth buying. But they did have some cool looking cars sitting in their stand.
A demo of Stalker was also running. It was a multiplayer map in which people could register for a competion. I was unable to play so watched over peoples shoulders as the majority of the time it was a pre-registered tournament going on. I noticed that you have to buy your weapons and kit at the start of each round similar to Counter-Strike but it didn't really impress and looked a tad boring. I decided not to wait and try it out myself.
As with all big gaming events and gamestarslive being the UK's equivalent of E3 I wasn't surprised that The European Gaming Championships was being held at the venue. Teams such as TAG, Four Kings, Last chance, and loads more with names I cannot remember were there gaming away for the whole day. I'm pretty sure these guys decided over clocking their PC's wasn’t enough and over clocked their brains to run at 1000fps. A member of TAG spawned at the beginning of the round, pressed a million buttons in less than a second and had all his kit bought. The next thing I see him pull out this AWP, boom, fast switch - pistol -back to AWP, boom. 2 guys down. Both headshots. This guy managed to frag the enemy within a few milliseconds. It was so fast it was unbelievable. All of the players were of high standard.
Fatal1ty (Number 1 World Champion of Doom 3) was wondering around and I noticed him being interview by a guy from ITV. oops, did I walk behind the camera... Later on I found him at the pcwcomponerntcentre.co.uk playing Doom 3 against other people. Looks like I didn't need to go into the official Doom 3 booth after all. This was better! A prize of £1000 and fatal1ty's own PC was being offered if you could beat him in a round. 6 frags against him were needed. player after player Fatal1ty humiliated and not a frag went against him. The former Russian Quake 3 champion even had a battle against him and was unable to take a frag. There were a few close encounters but in the end the Russian was unable to take him out. The host/commentator guy really added to the atmosphere and went wild anytime a battle broke out. Next up came a guy called Jason from Zimbabwe who hadn't yet played Doom 3. A few seconds went by and Jason was fragged. Fatal1y's always running around the map picking up health, armor, and other items. He knows these maps like the back of his hand. This time Jason decided he would take on Fatal1ty's own tactics. Both players were jump running all around the map and met each other and exchanged fire. Both players got hurt and backed down. Fatal1ty did his usual thing of running around the map and coming back to his previous position to make the final attack to finish off the enemy before they release were he'd come from. Except Jason wasn't there. He jumped behind him and hit him. Then fired again. Fatal1ty turned around but it was too late. The final shot had been fired.
"Fatal1ty was killed by Jason" popped up on the big plasma screen and the crowd went wild and the commentator went even wilder! After the game the host interviewed Jason who claimed Fatal1ty let him kill him and it was complete luck. Either way everyone was very impressed. A total of 100 players battled it out against Fatal1ty and no one but Jason managed to frag him once. Not surprising then he won $25,000 in the first ever Doom 3 tournament held at Quakecon earlier this year.

All in all it was a great day. So many games to play. It really was a great experience. It’s a shame I only had a £10 throw away camera to take the pictures otherwise you'd have seen more gamestarbabes. Babes did I say babes? Head on over to the new page to see some real eye candy
