[D3HQ Exclusive Interview] Dawn of the Dead Mod
2005-04-11 01:19

Posted by George

D3HQ got the chance to do an exclusive interview with the  Dawn of the Dead mod team. Check out the full story (link to the right) for more!

They  are also looking for a helping hand in mapping and skinning, so if you think you can help out or are just interested in this project head over to their site now. http://www.blacktreeuk.net/dawn_of_the_dead_home.html

Don't forget to read the full interview which can be found if you expand this new item by clicking the "full story" link to the right.

Heres the full interview:

You have completed 65mb of the mod so far, how big do you expect the first release to be and do you have an estimated release date?

Well I can’t really say, the size of the finished mod has never really crossed my mind I guess the finished article doesn’t matter as long as the thing gets done or at least has a huge percentage completed. The sad thing is I know I’m cutting out a minority of people with low speed net. As for a release date, I can quite happily say mapping will begin very shortly, most of the weapons that will be picked up near the beginning of your little adventure are done and in the game and we have well enough textures and models to keep mappers going for the mean time. But the release date seems a little far off to comment. Like I said we have enough contents to get the early maps done and while that happens I’ll carry on with modelling and making items.

So why did you choose the title "Dawn of the Dead" - did the film inspire you?

Well I’ve always been a big fan of George Romero and his style of filmmaking. The fact that he over shoots to give him extra options in the editing suite is real seat of your pants filmmaking. I chose ‘Dawn of the dead’ because it’s the most recognised Romero film “commercially speaking yet the mod will not be following any dawn plot it will simply be set in the world that Romero creates in “Night of the living dead (night of the flesh eaters) and “Dawn of the dead (zombie)

What sort of monsters/enemies will feature in the game and what type of character do you play?

Ok, there will be a huge number of zombie skins in the completed product, from clown zombies, tramps, and transvestites! You name it. Like Romero’s film there’s always the zombie you remember, Like the junkie zombie in “Night or the nun from “Dawn; so hopefully there will be enough in there to keep people jumping, laughing and running. There’s also the US Biological Response Team that are ordered to fire on anyone that tries to escape the area and this of course counts you. As for the lead character there isn’t much to say: An ordinary guy, never shot a gun in his life, works in a car assembly plant working days and nights suddenly plunged into living nightmare forced to kill and act like a criminal…should be great.

What sort of environments will you be placed in? Are you going to have lots of dark areas like in Doom 3?

The mod will have a number of environment changes, The mod begins very early in the morning so half of the game is at night, Like an old John Carpenter movie you need to dash in and out of alleys, buildings and streets to get to the main objective avoiding the huge plague of walking dead and the US Bio team. Then the rest is during the day. Items and weapons will be intelligently placed so don’t expect that much needed health kit sitting on the corner of the street, if it’s there it’s most likely used LOL. Ammo and guns will also be tough to find and will take a lot of salvaging around areas. This is the interesting thing…We have broke the weapons into groups, Melee, pistol and rifle and the player can only carry one weapon of that group at a time so it should make for more exciting play. While Melee weapons grow from bad to good, projectile weapons are a little different. Every shooting weapon will have advantages and disadvantages, either through accuracy, reload times or simply how rare or easy it is to find. Is it worth throwing away that revolver for a half empty Uzi? These things you must decide.
Back to environments, We have the downtown area much like a run down estate or rough Bronx area to the commercial area, city centre and shops, we actually pass through a mall. From there on we hit the countryside and industrial area. So 3 major acts basically.

Can we expect a lot or carnage?

Oh yes, the game is all about being trapped and out numbered. Your first item will be the mobile phone where you can receive calls off your work buddies held up in the car plant giving you help and advice as well as moving the plot along

How long do you expect the mod to take to be completed?

Well, I’m coming to the end of weapon construction, mapping will hit off big very soon, the weapon system is in place and the HUD is finished but being finalized - so soon rather than later but we can never tell. I’ve already been working on this project on a personal level for…well…too long it feels and I can’t wait to move onto other things. I’ve made some good hard working friends over the bones of this mod and I know I’ll always have a mod team ready to jump into action….I think.

Are you planning on implementing any sort of co-op or multiplayer modes?

Oh no, a simple single player mod is enough I think. The main zombie skinner will be picking up where I leave off so I could easily expect to see “Dawn of the dead 2 lol and who knows what avenue he’ll decide to take. It would be nice to have a Co-op but there wouldn’t be enough weapons and items on the maps and plus it’s just a whole different ball game. We have some really cool, unique ideas that I personally believe breaks us away from most other “doom 3 clone mods being made, to the exception of the dark mod which looks great and the Jedi mod which is just completely different but I’m no star wars fan so I can’t really speak.
